GA Southern to sign Portal swimmer Austyn Woods
Posted 2/6/20

Georgia Southern University has offered Portal Middle High School’s outstanding aqua athlete Austyn Woods a position on their 2020-2021 swim team roster.  Four years ago the Portal created the Panther Swim Team to provide Woods an outlet to develop and showcase her talent, and now they can watch her advance to the collegiate level.

Woods, a senior, and the sole, four-year member of Portal’s swim team, has qualified for the Georgia High School Association’s state swim meet every year. As a freshman, she placed 8th in the state in the 50-free for Division 1-3A. As a sophomore, she placed 5th in the 50 and 12th in the 100. As a junior, she placed 10th in the 50- free and 12th in the 100. This week, Feb. 6-8, she will make her fourth and final appearances at the state meet competing again in the 50-free style and 100-free style.

PMHS Swim Coach Travis Motes admits he knew nothing about swimming when the school formed the team, and he and fellow coach Ashley B. Thompson assumed lead for the team.  “Austyn’s taught me more about swimming than I’ve taught her,” Motes admits, but like any coach he beams with pride to see a student athlete succeed, in this case, in and out of the pool.

Woods, the daughter of Joey and Michelle Woods of Portal, is excited about furthering her education at Georgia Southern giving her Panther fans an opportunity to see her compete locally.  She plans to major in Early Childhood Education.
