Band Class

Band Classes

Portal Beginning Band –

Comprised entirely of 6th graders, the Beginning Band gives younger musicians a chance to learn the foundational information.  The group performs several concerts throughout the year, performing a repertoire of both popular and festival literature.

Portal Concert Band –

Comprised entirely of 7th and 8th graders, the Concert Band gives younger musicians a chance to further hone their musical techniques in preparation for more advanced literature.  The group performs several concerts throughout the year, performing a repertoire of both popular and festival literature.  Members are encouraged to pursue additional performance opportunities (District Band, Honors Clinics, Solo & Ensemble, etc.).

Portal Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is Portal High’s elite performance ensemble; as such, the class involves the most difficult and challenging literature – requiring advanced theoretical and pedagogical training.  The Symphonic Band is responsible for performing at all school functions requiring live music. Membership is open to high school students only.  Members are expected to practice daily, and are strongly encouraged to study privately with a local professional to further their musical endeavors. Participation in Solo & Ensemble Festival, District / All-State Band Auditions and honor band clinics is strongly encouraged.

Small Ensembles

Small and medium-sized groups of similar instruments may be formed for special-needs performances throughout the year.  These ensembles may participate in the Annual Solo & Ensemble Festival held in the spring.  Groups meet strictly outside of school hours, and are open to all members.  Examples of possible groups are: Brass Choir, Woodwind Quintet, Clarinet Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and Jazz Combos.
